What’s The Word I’m Looking For?
June 28, 2003

I think we’ve all had a time in our lives where we’ve been talking and had to say, “What’s the word I’m looking for?” Our intricate brains that are constantly thinking and learning sometimes just put themselves on pause. It can be frustrating and embarrassing.

We’ve been here eleven months and are learning the Portuguese language. Learning a new language is an interesting thing. It has been both fun and difficult.

One of the things that have intrigued me is how English words escape my mind as I put more and more Portuguese words in. When I try to think in English, sometimes all that enters my mind is Portuguese. I find myself saying, “What’s the word I’m looking for?” Or, I’ll go through several English words that are similar to what I want to say before the right one enters my brain. Sometimes, without even thinking about it, a Portuguese word comes out in place of an English word and I don’t even notice. Talk about frustrating and embarrassing!

But, even though it can be embarrassing or frustrating, I am so thankful for those times, because it means that God is enabling me to learn this language.
